ORBAN 2012 TV LOUDNESS CONTROL TOUR ROLLS INTO NAB VEGAS
March 5, 2012 Scottsdale, Arizona—Orban, a worldwide leader in audio processing for television, AM, FM, and Internet broadcasting, announces the list of cities for the 2012 Orban TV Loudness Control Tour. VP of New Product Development Greg Ogonowski, Founder and VP of Engineering Bob Orban, and President Jay Brentlinger will be among the presenters on this tour, which features the latest in TV loudness control technology from Orban. The Orban Television Mobile Demonstration Vehicle, which contains a fully equipped listening room for 5.1 surround sound and loudness control demonstrations, will be at most stops. The tour includes the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention in Las Vegas, April 16-19 (Booth N1634 in the North Hall), and SBE presentations in Los Angeles, San Diego, Minneapolis and other U.S. cities.
The tour will feature the Optimod-TV 8685 Television Loudness Controller for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound and will introduce the new, value-priced Optimod-TV 6585 Television Loudness Controller. Both products build on Orban's 30+ years of experience in television audio processing to provide audibly transparent automatic loudness control and dialog intelligibility control. Put in-line and set up using their easy "Quick Setup" procedures, these products will ensure that loudness always meets the requirements of the CALM Act and EBU R 128.
Both products have 3G HD-SDI input/output and offer comprehensive handling of metadata, particularly dialnorm. Dolby E® decoding and encoding are available as options. To accommodate preprocessed material from network feeds, the 8685 and 6585 can be seamlessly switched on-air between pass-through and processing modes.
Both products use a sophisticated, multiband psychoacoustic loudness model (developed at CBS Technology Center and refined by Orban) to control loudness smoothly and unobtrusively without the unnatural-sounding gain pumping, noise build-up, harshness, stereo image shifts, and compromised dialog intelligibility that can result from naive designs whose only goal is to make a BS.1770 loudness meter look good. In addition, these products feature sophisticated multiband dialog processing that can correct imperfectly produced program material by improving dialog intelligibility and by de-essing as necessary.
The 8685 can simultaneously process one surround program and four 2.0 stereo programs, making it useful for ATSC transmissions with subchannels. It is three rack units high and features a large color display. The 6585 can process either one surround program (including a correctly loudness-controlled downmix) or four 2.0 programs. It is 2U high and uses a 2x40 text-based display and LED meters. Both units offer dual redundant power supplies to help ensure maximum uptime, while free, high-performance PC remote software allows the units to be adjusted via LAN or Internet connections.
Jerry Delgado and Ed Vogt from Orban Authorized Dealer EAR Professional Audio Video (www.EAR.net) will contribute, with demonstrations at the NAB and at several tour stops. Orban and EAR have worked together to design and equip the Orban Mobile TV Laboratory. Tour dates are subject to change, and all Orban Mobile Broadcast Laboratory events are updated frequently at the www.orban.com/about/events/ page. Tour stops for July and on will be posted in 60 days.
